Must Have Kitchen Items

Alright guys, it's that time of year when we are all beginning to worry about the lb's we've gathered over the winter months while hibernating.  The swimsuits are already being put out to remind us that we need to start kicking it back into high gear.  With that always in the back of my mind, I thought I'd share some of the healthy items I always have in our kitchen.  These items are not only good for us, and have proven health benefits, but they will also end up saving you money.

 1.  Agave Nectar - This sweetener is derived from the same plant that tequila is made out of, so it can't be that bad right?! It is a great, natural substitute for regular old sugar, but be aware it is VERY sweet.  I use it for my coffee every morning, but you can also use it for baking and cooking.  When substituting, you should use about 2/3 cup to 1 cup of sugar.  It can be a bit expensive in the grocery store, so get it at Costco; you'll get 2 for the price of 1!

2.  Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO - thanks Rachel Ray) - This stuff has a multitude of health benefits.  It can not only be used for cooking, but you can add it to your beauty regimen as well!  I actually began using a combination of EVOO and Castor oil as a face wash, and it has significantly helped my skin.  Check it out HERE! Back to food though, this stuff is considered a "good fat," and I know what your thinking... "NO fat is good fat!"  But, you are wrong! We actually need "good fats" to keep a healthy and balanced diet, so don't be afraid to use this stuff when cooking.
      - Some notes about EVOO:  Unlike other oils, EVOO has a sweet flavor to it.  Don't buy too much, no matter what great offer Costco has running. EVOO will go bad if you don't use it fast enough.  Lastly, EVOO cooks at a lower temperature than other oils such as vegetable oil, so don't crank up the heat too high because you'll end up creating a smoke cloud in your kitchen!

3.  Apple Cider Vinegar - This is another item that has proven health benefits.  The best part of vinegar, is that you can pretty much use as much as you want.  Some small studies have shown benefits from Apple Cider specifically in regards to Diabetes prevention and Obesity.  Use this in homemade salad dressings or marinades.  Store bought salad dressings are packed full of sugars and preservatives.  Make a simple salad dressing base with honey, vinegar, oil, salt & pepper.  Use about a 1:2 ration of oil and vinegar.  Then, add any other flavors you want!

4.  Honey - Again, this can be used in salad dressings and many other items.  It's another natural sweetener that can be substituted for sugar.  Honey is GREAT for us, but don't be fooled, some honey is better than others.  This is one item you should buy organic is possible, and even better is to buy a local honey.  It's been proven that eating local honey can help prevent/help with allergies, especially for young children.

5.  Greek Yogurt - Not only is this stuff amazing with berries and honey, but it's also a great substitute when cooking.  When making any type of dip, I always substitute plain Greek Yogurt for sour cream.  You can also use it for pasta sauces or baking.  Check out a great conversion table HERE
